Headline: Our Journey: From Seed to Community

Impact

Global One Urban Farming began with a mission to address food insecurity, education, and environmental justice in our community. What started as a small effort has grown into a multi-year commitment to feeding, teaching, and empowering Kansas City residents.

2016

The Seed Was Planted
Global One Urban Farming was founded to provide fresh food access in a USDA-defined food desert while teaching sustainable growing practices.

2013–2018 — Greenhouse Education at African Centered College Preparatory Academy

Global One Urban Farming provided hands-on greenhouse education at George Washington Carver Greenhouse, teaching Pre-K through fifth-grade students the full greenhouse growing process under the leadership of Dr. Poke.

2020–2021 — Garden Club Partnership with KIPP Academy

During the 2020–2021 school year, Global One Urban Farming partnered with KIPP Academy to provide hands-on agricultural education, including year-round container gardening, plant production, and student take-home harvests.

2018-2020 Launch of School Garden Clubs at Ewing Marion Kauffman School

Urban Gardening Clubs were established at Ewing Marion Kauffman School (6401 Paseo, Kansas City, MO), teaching students greenhouse growing, container gardening with grow lights, and outdoor organic gardening practices.

2023–Present — Teaching Sustainable Urban Agriculture in Food Desert Communities

Garden Clubs and workshops continue to serve students in Kansas City’s urban core, equipping them with the skills to grow healthy organic vegetables and flowers, prepare food using what they grow, and present their learning to families, teachers, and school communities.

2019–2021 — Expansion of Urban Gardening & Food Desert Education

Building on early school-based programs, Global One Urban Farming expanded agricultural education focused on teaching students in Kansas City’s urban core how to grow organic vegetables and flowers from seed to harvest in indoor and outdoor gardens on newly purchased land at 4409 Cypress Avenue, a 1.5 acre site.

Impact-Focused-Growing Forward — Empowering the Next Generation of Urban Growers

Global One Urban Farming’s school garden programs help address food apartheid by teaching students how to create sustainable organic gardens for themselves and their communities.

IMPACT

Global One Urban Farming serves families, youth, and seniors across Kansas City who experience food insecurity, limited access to fresh produce, and barriers to agricultural education. Our mission is to teach communities how to grow and share healthy food while restoring the land and building local leadership.

1. Food Production & Distribution Program
We grow a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and pollinator plants on multiple urban plots and distribute over 10,000 pounds of fresh produce annually through our Hamer Free Food Box Program, community farm stand, weekly food distribution pick-ups and direct neighborhood deliveries. This program directly addresses hunger and health disparities by ensuring families have consistent access to nutritious, locally grown food—free of charge.

2. Youth Empowerment & Workforce Training Program
Through paid internships like Pro-X and our Teenage Farmers Program, youth ages 14–18 learn hands-on farming, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills. Participants help with planting, harvesting, and running community events while gaining real-world job experience. This program tackles barriers to employment and education by giving young people the tools, confidence, and mentorship to become the next generation of food system leaders.

3. Education, Training & Conservation Program
We provide workshops and field days focused on soil health, composting, water conservation, and pollinator habitat management—including care for our two bee apiary gardens. These sessions train community members, educators, and partner organizations to grow food sustainably while protecting native plants and improving biodiversity. This program strengthens community resilience and fosters environmental stewardship through shared learning.
